Matthias worked for five years in equity research and asset management at a Swiss private bank to finance his university education. After receiving his masters degree in finance from University Zurich he spent three years in corporate finance advisory for small and medium sized companies at a private bank in Zurich. The next 10 years he worked for Swiss Re’s Treasury team, where he was named Head of Funding and was in charge of Swiss Re’s multi-billion annual funding program. In addition he was responsible for the capital markets execution when Swiss Re introduced a holding structure in 2011. During his time at Swiss Re he successfully designed from scratch and issued a number of novel contingent capital instruments including a catastrophe trigger bond, which – for the first time – was placed outside of the dedicated cat bond investor universe. For his work across geographical markets and instrument classes he was named EuroWeek’s “Most Impressive FIG Funding Official” in 2012. This was the first time a non-bank funding official received this award.
